There’s something about Chicago that will always feel special to me. It was the first city I ever visited in the U.S., and I still remember that first trip so vividly — the excitement, the energy, the way the city just seemed to buzz with life. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to come back again and again, and every visit reminds me why I fell in love with Chicago in the first place. It’s a city that somehow feels both grand and welcoming, full of rich culture, incredible food, and the kind of architecture that makes you stop and stare.

This time around, I had the absolute pleasure of staying at the 21c Museum Hotel Chicago — and it made the trip even more memorable. We’ve stayed at other 21c properties around the U.S. before, and each one has had its own unique charm, so I couldn’t wait to experience what their Chicago location had to offer.

21c is not just a hotel brand — it’s an experience. They seamlessly blend boutique hospitality with a love of contemporary art, creating spaces where you’re not just staying overnight, you’re living among art that sparks curiosity and conversation. Their mission is all about making contemporary art accessible and welcoming to everyone, not tucked away behind velvet ropes, but part of your everyday surroundings. From the moment you walk through the doors, you can feel that spirit, and 21c Museum Hotel Chicago brings it to life in a way that’s both inspiring and completely inviting.

Set just off Michigan Avenue along the famed Magnificent Mile, 21c Chicago places guests at the very center of the city's energy and elegance. The luxury boutiques and flagship stores of Michigan Avenue are just steps away, Navy Pier can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot, and the iconic Cloud Gate sculpture at Millennium Park is around a 20-minute stroll. Whether visiting for art, architecture, or a day spent along one of America's most celebrated shopping avenues, the city unfolds effortlessly from the hotel's doorstep.

The Room: A Calm, Artful Retreat.

Stepping into my Deluxe Queen room at 21c felt like entering a thoughtfully curated sanctuary — a space where design and comfort worked in perfect harmony. The layout was open and inviting, with clean, modern lines and a soft, neutral palette that allowed the contemporary artwork to take center stage. Floor-to-ceiling windows filled the room with natural light during the day, creating a bright yet peaceful atmosphere that instantly put me at ease.

The queen-sized bed, dressed in crisp linens and a plush duvet, quickly became the heart of the space — perfect for stretching out after a day in the city. Sleek, built-in nightstands flanked the bed, blending function and style with integrated lighting and just the right amount of surface space for the essentials.

One of my favorite ways to spend time in the room was simply relaxing — whether it was reading in the cozy seating area, taking in the curated art pieces from different angles, or just pausing to appreciate the calmness that the room seemed to encourage. The setting made it easy to slow down and enjoy the quieter side of the city stay.

The bathroom carried the same refined, modern style, featuring a spacious walk-in shower, contemporary fixtures, and thoughtful touches like Malin+Goetz bath amenities. Everything felt intentional, allowing for comfort without ever compromising on design.

It wasn’t just a room to sleep in — it was a space to truly savor, and it added so much to the overall experience of staying at 21c Museum Hotel Chicago.

The Art Experience: Immersed in Contemporary Curiosity

One of the things that makes a stay at 21c so unique is how seamlessly they weave contemporary art into the entire experience — and their Chicago location is no different. Every property in their collection features rotating exhibitions, which means no two visits are ever exactly the same. The art feels alive, ever-changing, and accessible — not locked away behind velvet ropes, but part of the everyday atmosphere you live and move through.

During my stay, I had the chance to explore their newest exhibition, Truth or Dare: A Reality Show, which had just opened. It’s a collection that invites you to really stop and think — about perception, about what’s real and what isn’t, about how easily the lines between truth and illusion can blur. Spread across different mediums — from paintings to photography, video, and even site-specific installations — the exhibition feels bold, curious, and a little provocative in the best way.

A few pieces really stayed with me, like a ping-pong table transformed with a mirror top that challenges you to play one-on-one against yourself, and a monolithic black sculpture inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey that seems to almost shift reality around it. Each corner of the hotel seemed to offer a new discovery — a reminder that at 21c, the art isn’t something you simply visit; it’s something you live alongside.

Wandering through the spaces, you realize that this isn’t just a hotel with a gallery inside — the entire hotel is the gallery. It's thoughtful, approachable, and makes contemporary art something everyone can enjoy, whether you’re an art enthusiast or just someone who appreciates something unexpected around every corner.

Dining at Lure Fishbar: A Culinary Highlight of the Stay

Dining at Lure Fishbar, nestled just off the lobby at 21c Chicago, felt like stepping into a space that was effortlessly stylish yet comfortably inviting. The design blends the feel of a classic seafood house with a sleek, modern edge — polished woods, rich textures, and a warm, welcoming glow. It’s the kind of place that feels just right whether you’re settling in for a slow dinner or simply stopping by for a cocktail at the bar. There’s an ease to it that fits perfectly with the energy of the hotel.

On my first night, I started with the salmon tiradito — a dish so fresh, vibrant, and perfectly balanced that I immediately knew I'd be ordering it again. I paired it with a classic crab cake, packed full of sweet crab with just enough crispness around the edges, and a plate of lightly battered tempura shrimp that was every bit as satisfying as it sounds. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared, simple in the best possible way, letting the quality of the ingredients shine.

To complement the meal, I enjoyed a Yuzu Tequila Sour — a refreshing cocktail with a hint of citrus and a subtle kick. I also sipped on a glass of Poggiolo Sangiovese, a delightful red wine that paired beautifully with the seafood dishes.

There’s something about waking up in a space like 21c Chicago that encourages you to slow down and really take it in. I spent my last morning in a robe, coffee in hand, letting the soft morning light pour through the windows as I stretched out across the bed — the kind of moment that stays with you long after checkout.

I squeezed in a quick workout (a surprisingly good hotel gym, by the way) before wandering through the gallery one last time, stopping to revisit a few favorite pieces. Even the corridors feel considered — quiet, inspiring, and just a little unexpected in the best way.

Whether you're in town for work or simply making time for yourself, 21c Museum Hotel Chicago delivers an experience that feels both elevated and grounding. I left feeling refreshed, recharged, and already planning my return.
