Each year during spring break, we like to split our trip between two different properties—it’s our way of mixing things up, discovering new places, and keeping the energy of the week fresh. For the second half of our getaway this year, we returned to one of our absolute favorite spots in the Riviera Maya: the Waldorf Astoria Cancun*.

This property continues to impress us for so many reasons. First, the attention to detail is unmatched. From the moment you arrive, every corner of the hotel feels intentional and elevated—luxury without the fuss. The pool design is another standout, especially for families or couples who want space to lounge, swim, and soak in that Mexican sun without ever feeling crowded. From the moment of arrival at the Waldorf Astoria Cancun, everything feels effortless. Instead of lining up at a traditional check-in desk, you're welcomed like a guest of honor. We were immediately greeted at the entrance and escorted to a beautiful lounge area in the lobby where the check-in process happens in the most relaxed way possible.

While our bags were taken care of, we were offered signature welcome drinks—a refreshing mocktail for. It’s the kind of arrival that immediately signals: you’re on vacation now. The atmosphere was calm and elegant, setting the perfect tone for the days ahead.

After a quick check in we were escorted to the fifth floor . One of the things we love most about the Waldorf Astoria Cancun is how seamlessly the suites are designed for families. We had a beautifully appointed king room for ourselves, with an immediate adjoining queen/queen room for the boys—the layout felt more like one expansive shared space than two separate rooms. With the connecting doors open the entire time, it created a sense of togetherness and ease, while still allowing everyone to enjoy their own areas.

The boys had plenty of room to stretch out, relax, and unwind—whether they wanted to watch a movie, read a book, or just take a little downtime after the pool. Meanwhile, we could enjoy the calm of our own space, pour a cocktail, and soak in the moment.

And the little welcome touches? So thoughtful. Waiting for us in the room were fruit-infused waters, a selection of macarons, and the sweetest mini teddy bears for the boys—it was such a warm, personal way to start our stay and immediately made us feel right at home again.

The private balcony with sea views was the cherry on top, complete with a built-in hot tub that made early mornings and sunset evenings feel like a dream. And the bathroom? Total spa energy—with a rain shower, spacious double vanity, and elegant details throughout. Everything felt intentional and luxurious without ever sacrificing comfort.

The pool area at the Waldorf Astoria Cancun is truly a sanctuary of relaxation. Designed with both beauty and serenity in mind, the space features a striking black-bottom pool that gives the water a glassy, luxurious feel—especially stunning against the backdrop of the ocean just beyond. It’s a bold design choice that somehow makes the entire area feel cooler, calmer, and more elevated.

We found ourselves spending hours poolside each day, unwinding on plush loungers that offered just the right balance of sun and shade. For even more comfort, the cabanas are absolutely worth it—private, shaded, and outfitted with attentive service that made us feel completely taken care of. It was the perfect place for the boys to cool off between swims and for us to truly unplug with a good book or a light snooze.

As for refreshments, the poolside menu never disappointed. We sipped on refreshing cocktails (and mocktails for the boys), and we couldn't resist ordering the guacamole with house-made chips daily—it quickly became our go-to snack. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and served with the kind of friendly, easygoing service that Waldorf does so well.

There’s a quiet luxury to the entire experience. The pool never felt crowded or chaotic—just peaceful, polished, and relaxed. Whether you’re there for a quick dip, a lazy afternoon in the sun, or simply to enjoy a cocktail with an ocean breeze, this space delivers on every level.

One of the absolute highlights of our stay at the Waldorf Astoria Cancun was the culinary experience. With multiple restaurants and in-room dining options, everything we tried—from light bites to high-end dinners—was beautifully presented and full of fresh, vibrant flavor.

But if we had to choose a favorite? Breakfast, hands down. Mornings at the Waldorf felt like a special event in themselves. The fresh fruit plates were stunning—tropical, colorful, and arranged like works of art. The boys couldn’t get enough of the house-made pastries, while we leaned into the à la carte menu full of elevated takes on breakfast classics. From fluffy omelets and avocado toast to perfectly brewed espresso drinks, everything was served with care and attention to detail.

The setting, with natural light pouring in and ocean views just beyond, made it even better. It was the perfect, peaceful start to each day—whether we were heading off to the pool or planning something more adventurous.

Every dish felt thoughtful and refined without being overly formal, making it a great experience whether you’re having a quiet date night or dining as a family.

From sunrise fruit platters to beautifully plated dinners, the food at Waldorf Astoria Cancun is a huge part of what makes the entire stay so memorable—and so worth coming back for.
